In practice, C-segment cars have been described as having a length of approximately 4.5 metres (15 ft). The European segments are not based on size or weight criteria. In 2011, the C-segment had a European market share of 23%. It is equivalent to the Euro NCAP "small family car" size class, and the compact car category in the United States.
